Homeopathy is a system of healing which has been in use for over 200 years. Like other alternative treatments, it aims to treat the whole person but has its own special way of so doing.
Most medicine today can be described as ANTI- Anti-Biotics, Anti-Inflammatories, Anti-Bacterials; these all work against something.
Homeopathy, on the other hand, is PRO- . Homeopaths believe that the body has its own effective immune system and is capable of healing itself, although it does require support. Homeopaths regard the symptoms of disease as an attempt of the body to heal itself and the correct homeopathic remedy will support this attempt. If a substance triggers symptoms similar to those from which the patient is suffering, then a minute dose of this substance will encourage the body to fight and overcome the problem in question. In short, what causes symptoms will also cure them.
- An onion will irritate our eyes, making them stream. The remedy made from them (Allium Sepa) may help with hay fever symptoms.
- Coffee keeps us awake and gives us a boost. The remedy Coffea may help with insomnia.

Over the years symptom pictures have been built up of different substances: plants, minerals, chemicals, snake venom. There is even a remedy made from chocolate!
While you may go to your GP with a simple description of your problem, homeopaths need more information. For example, if someone had a migraine headache, it would be important to know specific details such as the location and frequency of the pain, what the pain was like and whether their vision was disturbed.
The more detail the patient is able to provide, the better. To a homeopath everyone is an individual, and disease and illness affects everyone differently. The symptoms that are expressed make it very much YOUR illness, and by knowing the full details of your symptoms, a homeopath is able to give more effective treatment.
While there are times when a single remedy will help, often there are several which might help. In order to decide, homeopaths use what is known as the constitutional type. Over 200 years some remedies have been found to work better when taken by certain types of people. It is therefore important to know if the patient is organised or untidy, chilly or warm blooded, extroverted or introverted, and many other things. All these things allow homeopaths to build up a picture of the patient, and allow them to find the remedy that will help the most.
